While doing some clean-up around a pond near our house, I spotted several small (3/8 inch) pink flowers near the edge of the pond. The flowers were
Winged Loosestrife (Lythrum alatum), a native plant that is endangered in Connecticut.

This native plant should not be confused with Purple Loosestrife (
Lythrum salicaria) which is an aggressive Eurasian plant that invades wetlands and forms dense stands that exclude other species.
