Spring Wildflowers

The common hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) is starting to bloom. The hawthorn, also known as a thornapple, is a member of the rose family, Rosaceae. The hawthorn is another invasive species found throughout our area.

The hawthorn flower is about 1/2 inch in diameter, and has five white petals. The numerous stamens of the flower are red when the flower blooms but turn dark with age.

Older flowers with dark stamens.
